Valerie Jones Re-Elected and Heather Ashley Elected to Irving ISD Board

During the regular IISD Board of Trustees meeting April 6, trustees declared Heather Ashley and Valerie Jones, who both ran unopposed, as elected effective May 18.

The filing deadline for trustee candidates was 5 p.m. March 9, and the deadline for write-in candidates was 5 p.m. March 16. Heather Ashley, filing for Place 3, and Valerie Jones, the incumbent in Place 4, were unopposed for election to the board. The official documents for declaring the candidates elected and cancelling the May 9 election were submitted to the trustees and approved as Order #08-09-03. The order will be posted in English and Spanish at each polling location on the date of the regular election.

Jones, Place 4, currently serves as secretary and will begin her second term on the board. Ashley, Place 3, will replace Randy Stipes who is completing his third term.  The candidates will be installed and will take office during the May 18, 2009 Board Meeting, that would have followed the regular election.

 

Trustees:

  • Approved Minutes of Noon Work Session and Regular Board Meeting on Monday, March 9, 2009, and Special Called Meeting on Friday, March 27, 2009.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-110 accepting proposal for photo identification system from Precision Business Machines, Inc. at a cost of $310,960.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-111 accepting KickStart martial arts program agreements for Austin Middle School, Crockett Middle School, Houston Middle School, and Lamar Middle School at a cost of $30,000 per year per campus with an additional $65,000 provided by Irving Schools Foundation.
  • Approved a new declaration for deposit accounts and treasury management services between IISD and Comerica due to the resignation of the superintendent.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-113 accepting various proposals for school furniture for MacArthur High School, The Academy of Irving ISD, Ratteree Career Development Center, Hanes Elementary School, and Irving Schools Stadium at a total estimated cost of $246,585 that includes delivery, installation and removal of trash.
  • Approved and adopted 2009-2010 school calendar that includes 187 duty days, 177 instruction days, three staff development waiver days and two weather days.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-114 accepting Guaranteed Maximum Price for Johnston Elementary School Bond Construction Project at a cost of $1,211,687.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-117 pertaining to the election and resignation of personnel as recommended by the acting superintendent.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-118 accepting gifts and donations to the district for March 2009 for a total of $13,549.
  • Approved Resolution # 08-09-115 accepting the resignation of Bobby “D” and approving a settlement agreement and release from contract.
  • Approved Resolution # 08-09-116 accepting the resignation of Robert “W” and approving a settlement agreement and release from contract.
  • Approved the appeal of R. Peterson requesting waiver of the interest and penalties of his tax payment.
  • Discussed high school schedule for 2009-2010 which may include expanding the fourth period into an alternating block in order to build extra time to provide educational remediation, acceleration, and re-teaching of students.
  • Discussed health insurance renewal proposal and associated 16 percent increase in cost to the district with the current plan.
  • Discussed 2009-2010 draft salary schedules for teachers with new money in the amount of 4.5 or 5 percent.
  • Received public input on the 2009-2010 budget.
  • Discussed the process for selecting an interim superintendent to serve after April 30, 2009.
  • Discussed the process for selecting the new superintendent of schools
