IRVING, Texas - The dog park outside the Irving Animal Care Campus will be closed until further notice as construction continues on a major expansion and renovation project designed to improve animal care services in the city.
According to the Irving Animal Services, the temporary closure is necessary because both Irving Animal Services and the DFW Humane Society will lose access to all outdoor dog yards and exercise areas during portions of the construction process.
Officials said the small dog park located outside the Irving Animal Care Campus will be used to help provide dogs with safe outdoor access while work is underway.
The outdoor areas are vital for more than just bathroom breaks. They provide fresh air, exercise, enrichment, and opportunities for dogs to socialize and play while awaiting adoption. Construction activities may also temporarily reduce public visibility of some adoptable animals housed at the campus.
Community Support Needed
Animal Services is encouraging residents to support local shelter pets during the construction period by:
- Adopting a pet
- Fostering an animal
- Volunteering
- Donating to support shelter operations
Officials said community involvement will help ensure animals continue receiving quality care while the project progresses.
Major Improvements Planned
The expansion project comes as Irving's population continues to grow. Since the facility opened in 2010, the city's residential population has increased by more than 22%, creating additional demand for animal care and shelter services.
Planned improvements include:
- Larger kennel spaces
- Expanded quarantine facilities
- Increased isolation unit capacity
- Additional exterior dog runs
- Upgraded HVAC systems
- A new clinical facility featuring:
- Surgery suites
- Radiology services
- Intensive care units
- Examination rooms
- An updated reception area
- Dedicated dog and cat transfer spaces
- Repurposed clinical areas to improve operations
City officials said the upgrades will help the campus better serve Irving's growing population and improve care for animals in need for years to come.
