DALLAS, Texas. A Peruvian national who admitted to committing an armed carjacking and leading Dallas police on a high-speed chase has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Texas announced.
22-year-old Omar Gayoso pleaded guilty in March 2026 to carjacking and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence in connection with a July 2025 armed carjacking.
On June 24, 2026, U.S. District Judge Ed Kinkeade sentenced Gayoso to 168 months, or 14 years, in federal prison. The court also ordered him to pay $26,000 in restitution.
According to court documents, Gayoso fired several rounds into the air to intimidate the victims before forcibly taking their vehicle, car keys and other personal property.
After stealing the vehicle, Gayoso fled from Dallas police officers, leading them on a high-speed pursuit through the city.
Authorities said the chase reached speeds of up to 123 mph before ending when Gayoso crashed into another vehicle.
U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould said Gayoso entered the United States illegally before committing multiple violent crimes.
"This defendant not only entered our country illegally, but once he got here, he committed horrendous crimes, including carjacking, assault, and discharging a firearm while committing a violent crime," Raybould said. "This 14-year sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes."
Raybould added that Gayoso will be removed from the United States after completing his federal prison sentence.
ATF Dallas Special Agent in Charge Brian Garner said violent crimes such as armed carjackings endanger both the public and law enforcement officers and will continue to be aggressively prosecuted.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Luis Suarez and Ashley Koos prosecuted the case.
