FORT WORTH, Texas - Two Fort Worth firefighters were hospitalized with burn injuries after crews encountered a sudden burst of intense heat and flames while battling a two-story house fire on the city's south side.
The Fort Worth Fire Department was dispatched to the 7600 block of Crowley Road at approximately 10:41 p.m. Crews arrived four minutes later and found smoke coming from the two-story residence.
Firefighters entered the home and began making their way toward the second floor, attacking the fire as they advanced.
As crews reached the upper portion of the house, they encountered a sudden burst of heat and flames. Fire officials noted that wind gusts were reaching up to 25 mph during the firefighting operation.
Firefighters Call Mayday From Second Floor
The dangerous conditions prompted firefighters operating upstairs to issue a mayday, signaling that members of the crew were in distress.
The incident commander immediately upgraded the response to a second alarm, bringing additional firefighters and resources to the scene.
Other firefighters located the engine company that had called the mayday and brought the crew outside, where medical treatment began.
Two firefighters suffered burn injuries and were transported to area hospitals. Both were reported to be in stable condition.
Despite the emergency involving their fellow firefighters, crews remaining at the scene continued battling the blaze and brought the fire under control in less than an hour.
Three adults were displaced from the residence. The American Red Cross was contacted to provide emergency assistance to the residents.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
