Cleburne Officer Shot, Armed Suspect Killed After Pursuit Ends Near Burleson Sam's Club

CLEBURNE, Texas - A Cleburne police officer was wounded and an armed suspect was killed Monday evening after a police pursuit traveled through multiple cities before ending near a Sam’s Club in Burleson.

The incident began at approximately 6:50 p.m. on Aug. 24 when Cleburne Police officers responded to a report of an individual brandishing a firearm.

Police said the individual was inside a vehicle when officers arrived, and a pursuit began.

The chase traveled through Alvarado before continuing northbound on Interstate 35W into Burleson. It eventually ended near the Sam’s Club at 600 N. Burleson Boulevard.

Cleburne Officer Shot in Leg

According to Cleburne Police, gunfire was exchanged during the incident. The individual being pursued was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene.

A Cleburne police officer was also shot in the leg during the encounter. The officer was transported to a hospital for treatment and was reported to be in stable condition Monday night.

Authorities have not released the name of the officer or the individual who was killed.

Police also have not provided details about what led to the initial report of a person brandishing a firearm, when during the pursuit the gunfire occurred, or who fired the shots that struck the officer and suspect.

The Texas Rangers were notified and responded to the scene in accordance with Cleburne Police Department protocol. The Rangers will lead the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

Authorities emphasized that the information released Monday night is preliminary and could change as investigators gather additional evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
