Irving Police Officer Shoots Knife-Wielding Woman During Domestic Disturbance in South Irving

IRVING, Texas - A woman was hospitalized Saturday evening after she was shot by an Irving police officer during a domestic disturbance in South Irving, according to the Irving Police Department.

The incident began at approximately 5:50 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, when officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Rolston Road for a reported domestic disturbance in progress.

As officers arrived, police said they encountered a woman standing in the middle of the street armed with a knife and making threats.

Officers gave the woman verbal commands, but according to police, she did not comply and continued moving toward them while holding the knife.

Less-Lethal Weapon Deployed Before Shooting

One of the responding officers initially deployed a less-lethal weapon in an attempt to stop the woman, police said. The department did not specify what type of less-lethal weapon was used.

Police said the less-lethal option was unsuccessful and the woman continued advancing toward the officers in what authorities described as a threatening manner while still armed with the knife.

A second officer then fired their duty weapon, striking the woman.

Officers immediately began providing medical aid until Irving Fire Department personnel arrived. The woman was transported to a local hospital. Her condition was unknown Saturday night.

No Irving police officers were injured.

Authorities have not released the woman's identity or said what led to the original domestic disturbance call.

Three Investigations Underway

The shooting will undergo multiple reviews.

Irving Police said the department will conduct both a criminal investigation and an administrative investigation, standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.

The Dallas County Public Integrity Unit will conduct a separate investigation into the shooting.

Police described the investigation as being in its very early stages and said no additional information would be released at this time.
