Twelve students from The Academy of Irving ISD took part in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America State Conference and Competition April 16-18 in Corpus Christi , returning to Irving with eight top awards.
In Leadership Enhancement Opportunities, students were awarded gold or silver certificates according to performance on various tests. Students earning gold certificates in job interview were: Judy Amaya, Cindy Diaz, Vanessa Martinez, Mirna Ramos, and Nicole Akpunku. Valery Escobedo earned a silver certificate for job interview.
In the Students Taking Action for Recognition (STAR) skill proficiency events, Lindsey Gillespie and Autumn Field placed second for Life Event Planning, and Subrina Hossain won third in Recycle & Redesign. STAR is the competitive portion of FCCLA with region, state and national levels of competition.
Academy junior Amber Gill served as vice president of STAR events for Region III, organizing several of the competitions. Gill will serve as vice president of projects for Region III for 2009-2010.
