Austin Honored as Teacher of the Month
Tracy Wiley, delivery lead in the Warehouse Department, was recognized as IISD Employee of the Month for June. Wiley joined IISD in 1998 with the Buildings & Grounds department and became interim lead in 1999. He became helper and parts pick-up person with the Warehouse Department in 2000 before becoming delivery lead in October 2008.
IISD Trustees recognized the MacArthur High School theatre department for having advanced to state competition in the 83rd Annual UIL One-Act Play Contest. Performing The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, MacArthur advanced to state for the first time since the competition began. Recognized students included: Gemma Garcia, Josh Moore, Katherine Edwards, Jason Douglass, Donald Bennett, Lyncoln Dyce-Brown, Heather Quinn, Kenneth Black, Briana Kidder, Tre Turner, Andre Jarboe, Mac Jennings, Joanna Rojas, Jason Johnson, Jesse Castillas, Ivan Gallindo, Greer Gardner and Preston Mueller. Theatre department directors are Phillip Morgan and Heather Chapman.
Heather Quinn, senior at MacArthur High School, was recognized by IISD Trustees for having earned the honor of National Merit Scholar. Quinn was named a National Merit Semifinalist in September 2008, and was offered a college-funded scholarship through the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. Quinn has been offered a scholarship from University of Oklahoma, where she will attend in August as a student in the Honors College.
High school valedictorians and salutatorians were also presented with laptop computers for having attained the top two rankings in their graduating class. Phil Simms, Irving Schools Foundation president, Chris Wallace, Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce (GILCC) president/CEO, and Alysia Bell, GILCC vice president, presented the computers. Valedictorians and salutatorians from the four IISD high schools are: Derek Nyugen and Nahum Madrid, Irving High School; Karen Cardenas and Brian Cardenas, MacArthur High School; Maria O’Connor and Marcos Vera, Nimitz High School; and Jason Douglass and Linh Vo, The Academy of Irving ISD.
Kenneth Austin, history teacher at the newly renamed Jack E. Singley Academy, was honored as Teacher of the Month for June. Austin graduated from East Texas State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in history and political science. Austin also holds a master’s degree in history from University of North Texas. Austin began his teaching career in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD and Itasca ISD. He joined IISD as history teacher at Union Bower Center for Learning in 1989 and moved to the Academy to teach history in 2001.
