The family of Charles Scott Watson has donated $2,000 to the Chess Club at Jack E. Singley Academy in memory of Watson’s service as teacher and chess coach in IISD.

Watson, who passed away August 3, joined Irving ISD in 2003 as special education aide at Singley Academy. He then became sixth grade math teacher at Houston Middle School in 2004. While at Houston, Watson co-sponsored the Chess Club, helping lead the team to win 12th place in the unrated division of the National Junior High Chess Championship in April 2008.

Watson’s parents, John Watson and Nancy Bauer, made the donation October 16. The donation funded a site license for Think Like a King chess training software for the Chess Club’s use. The software, which promotes critical thinking and problem solving, is the official training program of the United States Chess Federation.
