In a harrowing incident that occurred on June 13, 2020, Fort Worth Police Officer Matt Brazeal narrowly escaped death after being struck by a stolen vehicle traveling at a high speed of 70 to 90 mph. Miraculously, Officer Brazeal survived the impact and is now sharing his story of resilience and determination.
The incident unfolded at approximately 11:30 a.m. when Officer Brazeal responded to a pursuit involving a stolen vehicle in the vicinity of 3000 West Loop 820. Acting swiftly, Brazeal deployed STOP Sticks, a tire-deflation device, in an attempt to halt the suspect's vehicle. As the stolen vehicle approached, Brazeal recognized the perilous situation and managed to evade a direct collision. Nevertheless, the suspect vehicle struck the officer, propelling him onto the hood and dragging him for about 100 feet before his duty belt gave way, freeing him from the moving car.
Law enforcement authorities were able to apprehend the suspect, 38-year-old Ronnie Jackson Jr., shortly afterward, and a trial has been scheduled for September 2023 to address the criminal charges stemming from the incident.
Officer Brazeal sustained a laundry list of severe injuries as a result of the accident. These include a traumatic brain injury, a nearly severed left ear, extensive road rash, multiple broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a completely dislocated left elbow, a broken right humerus, a perforated bladder, a pelvis broken in three places, an almost severed left leg, a broken left femur, and a broken right ankle. Over the course of his recovery, Officer Brazeal has undergone approximately 60 surgeries, totaling an astonishing 108 hours in the operating room.
Battling through immense physical pain and enduring a relentless series of surgical procedures, Officer Brazeal has shown remarkable strength and determination. Despite the overwhelming challenges he has faced, the mental toll has been especially grueling. Each time he makes progress in his recovery, another surgery pushes him back. Just two days ago, Officer Brazeal underwent yet another surgery, further hindering his progress. When asked about his condition, he wryly remarked, "I've had better days."
Despite the long and arduous road to recovery, Officer Brazeal remains hopeful that he is nearing the end of this agonizing process. Light duty is anticipated to begin next month, marking a significant milestone in his journey toward regaining his health and returning to the police force.
Officer Brazeal's story serves as a testament to the courage and dedication displayed by law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to protect and serve their communities.
