IISD schools and partners in education have contributed to improving the health of students in the first weeks of November.
At Lively Elementary Schools, an effort of the physical education teachers is called Fitness in Rooms of Education (FIRE). The program is an experiment to fuel teachers with games and activities to get students moving as they learn. Sessions are offered on Thursday from 3:15-3:45 and helps attendees learn a new game or activity that can easily be implemented into classroom academic subjects. For students’ opinions on FIRE, access http://video.irvingisd.net/videos/iisd/es/lively/2010/FIRE.wmv.
Irving Lions’ clubs cooperated with Irving YMCA to host the Vision Van clinic November 3. Forty-six students received free eye examinations and glasses. In order to provide these services, Lions clubs collect used eye glasses, then recycle the frames for children in the community.
Irving Masonic Lodge #1218 and Masonic Children & Family Services donated dental kits and provided proper tooth-brushing techniques to first graders at Davis Elementary School and Lively Elementary School. All first graders at Davis and Lively received the kits containing toothbrushes, floss, toothpaste and a timer.
