School Board Recognition Month

January is School Board Recognition Month in Texas, and Irving ISD joins more than 1,030 school districts across the state in recognizing the elected officials who have volunteered considerable time to promote public education.

The annual recognition provides an opportunity for the Irving community to say “thank you” to the IISD Board of Trustees, who are responsible for the education of more than 34,200 students, the employment of more than 4,400 staff members, and an annual budget of more than $290 million. Trustees in IISD and their terms of service are: Valerie Jones, president, 5 years of service; Nancy L. Jones, vice president, three years of service; Heather Ashley, secretary, two years of service; Jerry Christian, seven years of service; Gwen Craig, one year of service; Ronda Huffstetler, 10 years of service; and A.D. Jenkins, three years of service.

Significant accomplishments in 2010 include the hiring of Dr. Dana T. Bedden as superintendent of schools following a nationwide search; breaking ground on Lady Bird Johnson Middle School – the largest net zero middle school in the United States; the renovation and dedication of Union Bower Center for Learning as the Barbara Cardwell Career Preparatory Center; a five-star rating for financial and academic accomplishment from the Texas State Comptroller’s Office; and various state and national awards for technology, student achievement and educational programs.
