Nimitz to Host Visit from Former Attorney General

Former United States Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will visit Nimitz High School beginning at 12:30 p.m. February 17.

Appointed in 2007 as the nation’s first Hispanic attorney general, Gonzales served in the post for two years during George W. Bush’s presidency. He comes to Nimitz in partnership with Texas Tech University and according to Texas Tech officials, the former attorney general will talk with students about the importance of a college education and tell them about his journey.

In a release provided by Texas Tech, administrators note that as the face of Texas changes, more and more high school students will have the choice to become first generation college attendees. This will require all of us in higher education to understand the importance of recruiting and retaining those first generation college students. The future success of our state will depend greatly on educating the growing number of minority students here in Texas.

Gonzales will attend a brief reception with IISD administrators and the media in the Nimitz library at 12:30 p.m. He will then deliver his presentation to students in the Nimitz gymnasium beginning at 1:30 p.m.
