On Monday, March 25, 2024, tragedy struck in the Far Rockaway area of New York City as Police Officer Jonathan Diller lost his life in the line of duty. Officer Diller, serving with the New York City Police Department for three years, was fatally shot during a routine traffic stop near 19-19 Mott Avenue.
At approximately 5:50 p.m., Officer Diller and his partner approached a vehicle stopped in front of a bus stop. Despite repeated requests for the driver to exit the vehicle, the individual refused. In a devastating turn of events, the driver drew a firearm and shot Officer Diller in the stomach, hitting him beneath his protective vest. Despite his injuries, Officer Diller managed to disarm the assailant, while his partner responded by wounding the suspect.
Officer Diller was transported to Jamaica Hospital, but succumbed to his wounds. He leaves behind his wife and one-year-old son.
The suspect, identified as having an extensive criminal record, was also taken to Jamaica Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
