Irving Animal Services Closed Temporarily Due to Suspected Illness

Irving Animal Services, located at 4140 Valley View Lane, has announced a temporary closure due to suspected cases of Streptococcus equi among the animals in its care. The closure is expected to last for several days as the department takes necessary precautions.

In light of the situation, adoption visits and owner surrender intakes have been temporarily suspended to prevent any potential spread of the illness. All animals showing symptoms have been isolated and tested, with results pending.

Residents of Irving are urged to refrain from bringing in stray animals during this time. Instead, they are encouraged to hold onto any found pets to prevent the spread of Streptococcus equi to other animals.

Irving Animal Services assures the community that it will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so. The department apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the closure and appreciates the public's patience and understanding. The primary focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of both animals and staff members.

What is Streptococcus equi?

Streptococcus equi is a bacterium that commonly affects horses, causing a highly contagious upper respiratory tract infection known as "strangles."  While it primarily affects horses, it can rarely infect other animals, including dogs.

Symptoms: fever, nasal discharge, difficulty swallowing, swollen lymph nodes, and abscess formation in the throat area, leading to difficulty breathing.
