Man Sentenced to 99 Years Escapes Trial, Tarrant County Launches Manhunt

Wanted: Jose Margarito Sonora

Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney's Office has reported that Jose Margarito Sonora, a 54-year-old man who was on trial, has fled and is currently at large.

Sonora was facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a family member, resulting in serious bodily injury. The trial concluded with a guilty verdict, and Sonora was sentenced to 99 years in prison along with a $20,000 fine.

The incident leading to Sonora's charges occurred on March 29, 2020, when he drove the mother of his children to Carter Park in Fort Worth at 3 am. There, Sonora shot her twice with a shotgun before leaving her in the park to die. Despite her injuries, the victim managed to seek help from a nearby neighborhood by knocking on doors, ultimately surviving the attack.

The Fort Worth Police Department conducted the investigation into the incident.

Due to Sonora's flight, the sentencing remains pending. He will be officially sentenced upon his apprehension and return to Tarrant County.

Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding Sonora's whereabouts to contact Investigator Bruce Blaisdell at 817-205-7250 or via email at BWBlaisdell@TarrantCountyTX.gov.
