The Grand Prairie Police Department is investigating the death of a three-year-old child that occurred on Wednesday, May 15th.
On Saturday, May 11th, at approximately 8:30 a.m., officers responded to Arlington Memorial Hospital after medical staff contacted GPPD regarding a child who was transported by family members to the emergency room with apparent assault injuries. Due to the severity of the injuries, the child was flown by air ambulance to Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth for treatment. The child later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by medical staff on Wednesday, May 15th.
During the investigation, Detectives determined the child had been physically assaulted at his residence located in the 1000 block of N. Highway 360 before being transported to the hospital.
On May 11th, at around 4:30 p.m., Detectives arrested Solnifasint Nelson, 21, for Injury to Child Causing Serious Bodily Injury or Death, a first-degree felony. Nelson is the stepfather of the deceased child.
Upgraded charges on Nelson may be forthcoming pending the results of additional medical exams on the deceased child. The case remains an active investigation.
