HOSA, FCCLA Win at State

and Tabitha Kenyanya won first place
Singley Academy students participating in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) and Family, Career & Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) competed at their respective state competitions April 14-16.
For the fourth consecutive year, the senior HOSA group won outstanding chapter and Junior Huy Nguyen won fifth place in Dental Spelling at HOSA the HOSA state convention in Houston. For their state win, the senior HOSA group will advance to the national convention in Anaheim, California, July 10-14. Additionally, Singley Academy HOSA sponsor Debra Johnson was elected to the Texas HOSA Board of Directors for a two-year term.
 
FCCLA State Conference and Competition was hosted in Houston. Juniors Jonathan Ramirez, Tabitha Kenyanya and Jesus Alvarez competed in the Applied Technology STAR Event, earning first place and receiving $4000 scholarships from Johnson & Wales University. The three students will advance to the national FCCLA competition in Anaheim in July.
 
Students also competed in the following events and earned plaques and medals: Lydia Garcia, Kellie Cubias and Sergio Martinez, second place and $3000 scholarships in Hospitality, Tourism, & Recreation; Magaly Rodriguez and Rhiannon Mata, second place in Environmental Ambassadors; and Subrina Hossain, second place in Promote & Publicize.
 
In addition to competitive events, students attended leadership tracks, heard motivational speakers, attended three general sessions, and competed in various competition events. FCCLA advisor is Susan Lambert.
