Students and staff in Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs at MacArthur High School, Nimitz High School and Singley Academy have made notable accomplishments in the past weeks and in the weeks to come.
CTE practicum teachers and City of Irving department heads hosted an intern forum at City Hall May 5. In order to build stronger relationships with city departments, Diana Soto, teen court coordinator, initiated the forum. Zirwa Sheikh and Krystal Nguyen, marketing students at MacArthur High School, won first place in the district The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurial competition sponsored by and advanced to semi-regional competition May 10. Also at MacArthur, students in the architecture program have been studying stadium design. Competing against others in the four architecture classes, students constructed scale models. Faculty and staff at MacArthur then voted on the models May 11.
Angela Warr, engineering teacher at Nimitz High School, was selected to review a future publication from NTS Press regarding problem solving in robotics. Entitled Eureka! Problem Solving with LEGO Robotics, Warr will review an article detailing LEGO Mindstorms as a versatile educational tool to help readers develop problem-solving capabilities. Also at Nimitz, Principal Rick Nolly was recognized by the FFA chapter May 10 for his support of the program.
Time Warner Cable, the official telecommunications provider for the HP Byron Nelson Championship golf tournament, has extended an opportunity for 12 students to participate in a behind the scenes tour. Singley Academy students will work with engineering and technical operations staff to see how TPC Four Seasons is wired for television. Students will also receive an introduction to sales engineering, an introduction to project management, an overview of the installation process, and have the opportunity to see the television production operations center.
