On November 27, 2024, at approximately 8:07 p.m., McKinney police responded to gunfire at an apartment complex on the 3300 block of N McDonald Street.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a 19-year-old McKinney resident approached a dark gray Dodge Ram pickup truck parked at the complex, leading to an exchange of gunfire with a 20-year-old passenger from Princeton. Both men sustained gunshot wounds.
Shortly after, the Dodge Ram arrived at Medical City McKinney, where the 20-year-old and 18-year-old Christopher Perez were dropped off. The 19-year-old was transported to the same hospital by EMS after receiving on-site assistance from officers. Tragically, both the 19-year-old and 20-year-old succumbed to their injuries.
An officer stationed near the hospital spotted the Dodge Ram leaving and initiated a pursuit. The driver, identified as 21-year-old Josue Mejia, led police on a chase that ended at a car dealership in Richardson. Mejia abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended after a brief chase.
Christopher Elijah Perez and Josue Benyami Mejia, both Princeton residents, were arrested and charged with murder. They are being held at the Collin County Detention Facility.
The McKinney Police Department is continuing its investigation to uncover the circumstances leading up to this incident, which is believed to be isolated. Authorities have stated that no additional suspects are being sought.
