IRVING, Texas — Irving Police arrested three men on Thursday, September 10th, following a burglary at Big D Travel Center.
Officers responded around 7:20 p.m. on that day to an alarm call at the 300 N. Looper 12 location. A security employee that monitors video from another location reported multiple men had entered the building without consent. Video surveillance showed that two of the suspects left and returned in a 2001 Ford Mustang, retrieving a black bag left outside the bay doors by a third accomplice. The officer called in the description into dispatch as he remained on site.
Another Irving officer located the Mustang and stopped it on Wildwood Drive. Inside, officers found copper piping, wires, electrical cords, and other components, along with burglary tools. The passenger was identified as 49-year-old Jason Allen Brown of Arlington. Him and the driver collaborated and admitted that they had been at the Big D Travel Center. They also told the officer that another individual was still at the location.
The officer at the scene, still looking for the third suspect, located a freshly broken glass door to the Fuel Desk where there were signs of burglary. He then located the third suspect inside the Big D Travel Center wearing a mask, work gloves, a head lamp and he had burglary tools for stealing wires in his pockets. He was able to arrest the suspect without incident.
The suspect also admitted the other two had just left, matching the story from the two in the Mustang. He was identified as 37-year-old Kerry Patrick Smith of Arlington. The third suspect in the vehicle was 56-year-old Roderick Vaughn Smith of Dallas.
All three were charged with Burglary of a Building, Unlawful Use of a Criminal Instrument, and Engaging in Organized Crime. Additional warrants were issued for Kerry Smith for a parole violation. Roderick Smith had prior convictions for burglary and robbery, including a recent six-month sentence for a February 2025 burglary conviction (released in May after receiving 91 days credit for being in custody since his arrest in November 2024).
