Mesquite Man Dies After Parking Lot Shooting; Suspect Arrested on Murder Charge

MESQUITE, Texas - A 38-year-old Mesquite man was killed Wednesday night after being shot in a business parking lot, and a suspect has been arrested and charged with murder, police said.

According to the Mesquite Police Department, officers responded at approximately 9:51 p.m. on Feb. 4, 2026, to a shooting in the 300 block of Rodeo Center Boulevard. Multiple 9-1-1 callers reported a man lying in the parking lot who had been shot.

Responding officers located the victim and rendered emergency aid before he was transported to an area hospital. Police said the victim, identified as Jose Rodriguez Jaquez, 38, of Mesquite, later died from his injuries.

Investigators obtained a description of a suspect vehicle and located it a short time later. Officers conducted a traffic stop and identified the driver as Brian Damian Maldonado, 35, also of Mesquite. Maldonado was initially arrested for operating a vehicle without a front license plate.

Following further investigation by Mesquite police investigators, Maldonado was additionally charged with murder.  His bond has been set at $200,000.
