When Mithu Sau moved from East India to the United States in October 2022, she didn’t anticipate the challenges she would face in continuing her career. With over 15 years of experience as an IT supervisor, Sau discovered that her academic credentials were not recognized in the U.S. after relocating due to her husband’s job transfer.
"I graduated with honors in India, so I was surprised to know that my degree and years of experience wouldn’t be recognized here,” Sau said. Despite the setback, Sau was determined to begin anew.
She soon found the Irving ISD Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program, which partners with Texas Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas to provide free classes to over 500 adult learners. The program offers courses to help students obtain their GED, citizenship, English proficiency, and various workforce certifications. Sau enrolled in summer 2023, aiming to improve her English through the GED program and eventually secure a work permit.
"I really like the AEL program," Sau shared. "The teachers, staff, and my classmates have been so helpful. They’re funny, supportive, and it’s nice to see their smiling faces during the week."
As a life-long learner, Sau dreams of returning to college after earning her GED. She credits her family, especially her son Sarkar, who remains in India working as an engineer, for their unwavering support. Despite the distance, she says, “He’s my best friend. We talk all the time, and he’s been very supportive of my decision to advance my education.”
Outside of her studies, Sau enjoys painting, gardening, and cooking, with fish curry being a favorite dish that reminds her of home.
Sau’s journey demonstrates the power of perseverance and the importance of seizing new opportunities.
