Recent rains have replenished Jim Chapman Lake in Hopkins County, Irving’s main water source, bringing levels back to full capacity. This improvement is a welcome change from just a few months ago when lake levels had dropped to around 75%. However, with Texas’ unpredictable weather, including the possibility of a dry, hot summer, now is the perfect time to adopt water-saving habits.
The city encourages residents to make small changes to ensure a steady water supply throughout the year.
Simple Ways to Save Water:
- Outdoor Watering: Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation. Follow the city’s twice-per-week and time-of-day watering guidelines. Use native or drought-tolerant plants that require less water. Turn off sprinklers when rain is expected.
- Watering Restrictions: Time-of-day watering restrictions are in place from April 1 to October 31. Watering is prohibited between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., and residents are limited to twice per week watering as follows:
- Sunday & Tuesday: Odd-numbered addresses
- Wednesday & Saturday: Even-numbered addresses
- Fix Leaks Fast: Even small leaks can waste significant amounts of water. Regularly check faucets, toilets, and sprinklers.
- Use Water-Efficient Fixtures: Install low-flow showerheads, faucets, and high-efficiency appliances to save thousands of gallons annually.
- Make Every Drop Count: Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads, and take shorter showers. Even cutting back by a minute can make a difference!
Residents are urged to adopt these simple conservation habits to help ensure a reliable water supply for the future.
