UNT Dallas in Southern Dallas will hold its monthly drive-thru food pantry event this Friday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to noon, or while supplies last. The event aims to provide free, nutritious food to any North Texas community member facing food insecurity.
WHAT: Mobile food pantry event hosted by UNT Dallas and the North Texas Food Bank

Organized in partnership with the North Texas Food Bank, the initiative takes on increased significance due to recent federal budget cuts that may impact food assistance programs. With Memorial Day approaching and summer break on the horizon, many families are anticipating higher food costs due to rising grocery prices and reduced benefits, making resources like the UNT Dallas food pantry crucial.
So far in 2025, the UNT Dallas food pantry program has distributed over 93,000 pounds of food to nearly 4,400 individuals across the region. This builds upon the over 566,000 pounds of food provided to nearly 18,000 people in 2024.
Food insecurity remains a significant issue in North Texas. According to the North Texas Food Bank, one in six children in the region lives in a home without reliable access to nutritious meals. Statewide, nearly 5.1 million Texans are affected by food insecurity, ranking Texas second in the nation according to the USDA.
UNT Dallas launched its mobile food pantry five years ago in response to the pandemic. It has since evolved into a vital monthly resource for both students and the wider community. The free drive-thru service is open to the public, allowing participants to remain in their vehicles and complete a brief intake form while volunteers load a box of food into their trunk.
Future food pantry dates at UNT Dallas include June 20, July 18, Aug. 29, Sept. 19, Oct. 17, Nov. 22, and Dec. 19 (dates are subject to change).
