A Dallas County jury has found 37-year-old Walter Jones guilty of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon following a shooting incident in the Five Points area. Jones, a documented member of the Gangster Disciples criminal street gang, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, probated for 10 years.
The shooting occurred after a fight broke out between Jones, the victim, and a third person. When the altercation ended, the victim returned to his car in an attempt to leave. Jones then retrieved a firearm from his own vehicle, cornered the victim, and fired multiple shots into the car. The victim was struck in the back.
Following his arrest, Jones told investigators he acted in self-defense, claiming the victim had held a gun to him and struck him with a brick during the initial altercation. However, the victim refused to cooperate with prosecutors and did not testify at trial.
Despite the lack of testimony from the victim, the jury rejected Jones’s self-defense claim and returned a guilty verdict.
The case was prosecuted by Sarah Hayes and Steve Fawcett, with investigative support from DA Investigator John Schingle. The Dallas Police Department led the investigation.
