Irving ISD Honored for Sportsmanship and Community Involvement in Athletics

Irving Independent School District (ISD) has been named a Texas Way District of Distinction by the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association (THSADA). This award recognizes school districts that prioritize sportsmanship, community involvement, and positive character development in their athletic programs.

Key Pillars of the Texas Way Initiative

According to Irving ISD, the distinction was earned by focusing on the three core principles of the Texas Way Initiative:

  • Respect: Upholding respect for others, regardless of the opponent.

  • Control of Self: Taking control of one's responses in every situation.

  • Spirit of Competition: Valuing good sportsmanship above wins and losses.

Community Impact and Student-Athlete Development

Irving ISD's commitment to community service was a major factor in receiving the honor. The district had 247 participants, including student-athletes, coaches, and athletic directors, who volunteered at the Irving Marathon. They helped with water stations and encouraged runners, demonstrating values that extend beyond the playing field.

Superintendent Magda A. Hernández stated that the distinction is a "testament to the values we strive to instill in all Irving ISD students—character, honor, integrity and service."

According to Executive Director of Athletics Mike Luttrell, the district's goal is to create a positive game-day experience and instill life skills through sportsmanship. Athletic Director Natasha Stewart added that the initiative helped student-athletes from different schools come together as "one team," reinforcing the importance of getting along with others regardless of differences.
