A 27-year-old Rendon woman has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to the murders of her mother and grandmother.
Kaitlyn Bailey was given two concurrent life sentences for the fatal shootings of 60-year-old Shari Lynn Bailey and 84-year-old Bertha Sowell Bailey on November 22, 2023. The crime occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. at the family home in Rendon, Texas.
According to court records, Kaitlyn demanded money from her mother. When Shari refused, Kaitlyn took her mother’s gun and shot both her mother and grandmother. Despite being critically wounded, Shari was able to call 911 and identify Kaitlyn as the shooter before succumbing to her injuries at a local hospital about four hours later.
Both victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Tarrant County deputies responded to the scene, and Kaitlyn was later arrested in Callahan County near Abilene.
Court documents note that Kaitlyn Bailey has a lengthy criminal history, including a 2015 charge for injury to the elderly and 2021 charges for harassment of a public servant and family violence assault.
Shari Bailey was a 1981 graduate of Mansfield High School, and Bertha Bailey was originally from Kansas and a former neonatal nurse at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth.
The case was prosecuted by Tarrant County attorneys Lloyd Whelchel and Jeff Stewart.
