Irving Veterinarian Dr. Michael Burkett Celebrates 50 Years of Caring for Animals

IRVING, Texas - For nearly half a century, generations of pet owners have trusted Dr. Michael Burkett with the care of their beloved animals. This year, the longtime Irving veterinarian is celebrating a remarkable milestone — 50 years in veterinary medicine.

Dr. Burkett, owner of Buena Vista Animal Clinic in Irving, graduated from Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1976 after attending both Louisiana State University and Oklahoma State University.

Following graduation, he returned to his home state of Louisiana, where he practiced veterinary medicine until 1981. That year, he moved to Irving and opened Buena Vista Animal Clinic, where he continues to serve the community today.

Now, five decades after earning his veterinary degree, Dr. Burkett remains passionate about the profession he chose as a young man.

When asked if he would choose a different career if given the opportunity to start over, his answer was immediate.

"Not at all," Burkett said. "I love what I do, and veterinary medicine has blessed me and has been good to me."

Born March 3, 1952, in Alexandria, Louisiana, Dr. Burkett has built a reputation throughout Irving for his knowledge, patience, and compassion toward both his patients and their owners.

Over the years, he has faced significant personal challenges, including a battle with cancer. Despite undergoing treatment, Dr. Burkett continued showing up for work and caring for his patients.

Reaching his 50th year in practice has caused him to reflect on the future and the eventual prospect of retirement. However, he says what keeps him going is the responsibility he feels toward the clients and animals who depend on him.

Throughout his career, he has developed long-lasting relationships with families who have entrusted him with the care of multiple generations of pets.

Burkett credits his faith and family for helping him throughout his journey.

He said God has blessed him not only with a fulfilling career, but also with his wife, son, daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, and a church family that has remained an important part of his life.

Beyond his veterinary practice, Dr. Burkett has been active in the community. Since opening Buena Vista Animal Clinic, he has assisted local humane societies and animal services organizations. He has also supported wildlife conservation efforts through the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation since 1985.

Today, Buena Vista Animal Clinic remains a fixture in the Irving community. Located at 4131 N. Story Road near the intersection with W. Walnut Hill Lane, the clinic continues to provide care under the leadership of a veterinarian whose dedication to animals has spanned five decades.

As Dr. Burkett marks 50 years in veterinary medicine, his legacy is reflected not only in the countless animals he has treated, but also in the generations of families who continue to place their trust in his care.
