HURST, Texas—The City of Hurst has announced the unexpected passing of Police Chief Steve Niekamp due to a health complication.
Chief Niekamp had been with the Hurst Police Department since 1990 and served as police chief since January 2018.
"Chief Niekamp dedicated his life to serving the Hurst community. He consistently led with integrity and demonstrated unwavering loyalty and appreciation to his team," said City Manager Clay Caruthers. "Chief Niekamp will be dearly missed."
The city stated that his leadership and commitment to professionalism will have a lasting impact on the community. The Hurst Police Department and the City are grieving with his wife, family members, and the department.
The city has requested privacy for his family during this difficult time.
