Grapevine Police Arrest Suspect in Bitcoin Scam Targeting Elderly Resident

Arrested: Song Bai

Financial scams continue to pose a serious threat, but awareness and quick reporting can make all the difference. Grapevine Police have arrested a suspect accused of defrauding a 78-year-old resident out of thousands of dollars in a Bitcoin scam.

In August, the victim received multiple phone calls from a scammer posing as her bank. The caller falsely claimed she was under investigation for fraudulent charges and instructed her to withdraw her savings and deposit the money into a Bitcoin ATM “for safekeeping.” After repeated calls, the woman became suspicious and contacted Grapevine Police.

Working closely with investigators, the victim helped set up a sting operation. Detectives continued communication with the scammer and arranged a meeting to hand off more money. When the suspect arrived, he was taken into custody.

Song Bai has been charged with Theft of Property ≥ $2,500 < $30,000 (State Jail Felony). The investigation remains active as police work to identify additional suspects connected to the scheme.

Police warn that scammers frequently reach out by phone, text, or email, often using high-pressure tactics to create fear and urgency. Authorities urge the public to avoid responding to suspicious messages or following instructions from unknown callers. Anyone targeted by similar scams should report the incident immediately.

“Staying alert helps protect not only yourself but the entire community,” Grapevine Police said in a statement.
