Irving Man Convicted and Sentenced to 30 Years in Fatal Shooting Case

Raimundo Rubio (defendant) and Josue Umanzor (victim)

On October 1, 2025, Raimond Rubio of Irving was found guilty of murder by a Dallas County jury and sentenced to 30 years in prison by Judge Elizabeth Frizell.

Rubio was convicted in the death of 31-year-old Josue Rigoberto Umanzor. Irving police responded on the morning of December 28, 2023, to an assault call in the 2200 block of Etain Rd. Officers found Umanzor with a gunshot wound, and he later died at Parkland Hospital.

The investigation identified Rubio, a Venezuelan national residing in Irving without legal status, as the suspect. Rubio had been held on a $1 million bond since his arrest on December 29, 2023. Umanzor, originally from El Salvador, is survived by his wife and two children.

During the trial, which began March 24, 2025, Rubio claimed self-defense and argued “sudden passion arising from adequate cause,” a legal concept that can reduce a murder charge if a defendant acted under intense emotional distress provoked by an adequate cause. The jury rejected this defense and returned a guilty verdict.
