Irving Students Invited to Share MLK-Inspired Essays on Building a Stronger Community

IRVING, TX - Irving students in grades 3 through 12 are being invited to reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and share their vision for a stronger community through a citywide essay contest tied to Irving’s 2026 MLK observance.

The contest theme, “Together We Dream: Building Stronger Community Through Action,” encourages students to explore Dr. King’s message of unity, courage, and service, while connecting those ideals to real-life actions that can make Irving a more connected and compassionate place.

City officials say the essay contest is designed to honor Dr. King’s role in the American Civil Rights Movement and his belief that meaningful dialogue and everyday acts of kindness can help bridge divides. Students are encouraged to think critically about how standing up for others, showing empathy, and taking positive action can strengthen their schools, neighborhoods, and the broader Irving community.

Essays must be original, no longer than one page or 500 words, and will be judged on clarity, grammar, and the student’s understanding of Dr. King’s legacy and hopes for the future. Submissions are open through Jan. 7.

The contest is divided into three age categories: grades 3–5, grades 6–8, and grades 9–12.

Winners from each category will have the opportunity to read their essays during the city’s Martin Luther King Jr. Observance on Jan. 18 at the Irving Arts Center, located at 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd.
