Irving parents, take note: all youth library cards not renewed since October 15, 2025, will expire on February 20, 2026. This “February 2.0” reset affects all cards for children and teens under 18 and gives parents a chance to select new access levels for their kids.
Since October, the library has offered two new youth card types: one with age-restricted borrowing and another with full adult borrowing privileges. Student cards, which don’t allow physical or digital checkouts, are not affected.
Parents and guardians must renew youth cards in person by February 20 to choose the card type that best fits their family’s needs. After Dec. 17, updated expiration dates will be visible online.
Don’t let your child’s access lapse—renew today to keep them connected to all the library’s services!
Common Questions
What are the new card types and what do they offer?
Visit the library's Card Types page and select the "Youth Cards | Ages 17 and Under" drop down entry to read more about the new card types specifically and access a PDF brochure on Youth Card types.
Do I have to bring my children to the library for the renewal?
Possibly. If the parent has the child's library card, the child does not have to be present. If the child is present at the renewal, the parent does not have to have the child's library card.
What if it's been a long time since my child was signed up and has not been an active user?
Accounts with no fines are removed from the system after three years of inactivity. If unsure, please call (972) 721-2440 to be connected to a preferred library location before arriving to renew and have the child’s library card number available.
Must I throw away my child's current physical card?
No. The physical card will stay the same regardless of the youth card type selected in the system. Those wishing to replace the card design or who cannot locate the card, may purchase a replacement by paying a $2 fee.
What happens if I do nothing?
The youth cards for your children will expire on Feb. 20 and they will not be able to check out materials. If not renewed, an account with no fines may be removed from the system after 3 years of inactivity.
