CARROLLTON, Texas - A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed Monday evening in Carrollton after what police say was an attempted robbery gone wrong.
The Carrollton Police Department responded shortly after 7 p.m. to the 2200 block of Heads Lane, following reports of gunfire. A second call came in moments later from a woman saying her son had been shot in the head. Emergency responders transported the teen to Carrollton Regional Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner identified the victim as 16-year-old Deandre Anthony Salazar.
According to investigators, the shooting unfolded in the roadway on Heads Lane. Police said Salazar, along with three other teenagers, 17-year-olds John Avila and Markellin Soto, and two 15-year-old girls, had traveled to meet 20-year-old Adan Sandoval of Carrollton. The group intended to sell illegal substances, but police say the meeting was a setup for a robbery. During the encounter, Salazar allegedly brandished a firearm, and Sandoval fired in self-defense.
Police have charged Avila, Soto, and one of the 15-year-old girls with aggravated robbery. Sandoval has not been charged at this time. Detectives continue to review digital and forensic evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
