COCKRELL HILL, Texas — A late night traffic stop for speeding turned into a vehicle pursuit and foot chase with an armed suspect before Cockrell Hill police officers took the driver into custody, authorities said.
Just before midnight on March 9th, officers attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding in the 4100 block of West Jefferson Boulevard. Instead of stopping, the driver fled, leading officers on a pursuit through the city.
Police said the suspect drove recklessly during the chase, ran a stop sign and eventually crashed into a parked vehicle in the 400 block of Archer Avenue.
After the crash, the suspect exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers reported seeing him retrieve a firearm from his waistband as he ran. Three additional occupants were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.
During the foot pursuit, officers saw the suspect discard the firearm. One officer continued chasing the suspect, jumping a chain link fence and issuing verbal commands before the suspect complied and was taken into custody with assistance from another officer.
The firearm, identified as a stolen Glock 19 handgun, was recovered at the scene.
Police identified the suspect as Tahj Christian Myers, 20. He faces charges of Evading Arrest or Detention with a Vehicle, Tampering with Physical Evidence, Collision Involving Damage to a Vehicle, Theft of a Firearm and Unlawful Carry of a Weapon.
Authorities said no officers or suspects were injured during the incident.
