Suspect Killed After Pointing Gun at Deputy in Red Oak Officer-Involved Shooting

ELLIS COUNTY, Texas — A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon in Red Oak, according to the Ellis County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were dispatched around 3:36 p.m. May 6 to the 100 block of Carol Lane after reports of a disturbance. Callers reported hearing yelling and what sounded like a gunshot coming from a nearby residence. A separate call indicated an adult male was actively threatening self-harm.

When deputies arrived, one deputy encountered the man outside the residence armed with a firearm. Authorities said the deputy gave multiple commands for the man to drop the weapon, but he refused and pointed the gun at the deputy.

The deputy then fired his weapon, striking the man.

Deputies immediately rendered medical aid until emergency personnel arrived. The man was transported to a Dallas-area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Officials said incidents like this affect everyone involved, including the individuals, families, deputies and the broader community.

The Texas Rangers have been requested to lead the investigation into the shooting, in accordance with standard protocol.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional details have been released.
