DALLAS, Texas — Two men have been arrested following an investigation into the fatal shooting of a 2-year-old child last month in Dallas, according to the Dallas Police Department.
Police said officers responded at approximately 1:20 p.m. on April 23, 2026, to a shooting call in the 1700 block of Hemphill Drive.
Investigators determined that a 2-year-old child had suffered an apparent gunshot wound. The child was transported to a local hospital, where the child later died.
According to police, 25-year-old Toderick Austin, identified as the primary person of interest, fled the scene before officers arrived.
Due to the nature of the case, the department’s Child Abuse Unit coordinated with the Violent Crimes, Safer Streets, and Fugitive Task Force units in an effort to locate Austin.
Investigators said efforts involving Austin’s social media accounts led detectives to another individual, identified as 18-year-old Jayveion Burnley, who was described as a known associate of Austin.
Once Burnley’s location was identified, authorities executed a search warrant at the location and took both Austin and Burnley into custody.
Police said investigators also recovered several firearms and illegal narcotics during the operation.
“This was a tremendously heartbreaking case that deeply affected the community of Dallas,” Chief Daniel Comeaux said in a statement. “I’m incredibly thankful that this department was not only able to bring justice and closure to this incident but also make our streets safer by recovering firearms that were sure to be used in future crimes.”
Austin is facing multiple charges, including Make Firearm Accessible to Child Causing Death or Serious Bodily Injury and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
Burnley was charged with Possession of Prohibited Weapons.
The investigations are documented under case numbers 057714-2026 and 060544-2026.
