Irving Woman Charged With Felony Assault After Injuring Disabled Brother

Darleen Cruz

IRVING, Texas — An Irving woman is facing a felony charge after police say she assaulted her disabled brother during a domestic disturbance at a South Irving apartment.

According to the Irving Police Department, officers responded at approximately 11:28 p.m. on June 30th to the Watertower Villas Apartments in the 2400 block of Parkside Avenue near N. Story Road for a report of a domestic disturbance in progress.

Police said 22-year-old Darleen Cruz called 911 and reported she had been involved in an altercation with her brother, who she advised has a disability. Officers were informed of his specific medical diagnosis during the investigation but are not releasing that information to protect his privacy.

According to police, Cruz told officers she asked her brother to be quiet because she was trying to sleep, and the request escalated into an argument.

Investigators said the victim reported Cruz struck him on the right wrist with a cellphone charging cable, leaving a noticeable reddish welt. During the ensuing struggle, Cruz bit her brother on the right forearm, leaving a visible bite mark.

The siblings' mother, who witnessed the incident, told officers that the altercation was so severe that it took her and her husband to physically separate them.

Based on the victim's statement, the visible injuries, and the corroborating witness account, officers determined there was probable cause to arrest Cruz.

She was booked into the Irving Jail on a charge of Injury to a Disabled Individual with Intent to Cause Bodily Injury, a third-degree felony.

Cruz has since been released on bond. The case is pending review by the Dallas County Criminal District Attorney's Office.
