THE COLONY, Texas - A man accused of committing an armed robbery at a restaurant in The Colony was shot by Richardson police early Thursday after allegedly firing at officers during a multi-city pursuit that ended in Dallas.
The Colony Police Department responded at approximately 11:23 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, to a reported aggravated robbery at Sheesh Eatery & Lounge.
According to investigators, the suspect displayed a handgun and demanded money from a group of individuals before fleeing the scene in a black Jeep.
Using surveillance video, officers quickly identified the vehicle's license plate and entered it into the department's Flock Safety license plate reader system. The Jeep was later detected traveling toward Plano, where officers coordinated with neighboring law enforcement agencies. Investigators also learned the vehicle had been linked to a separate incident in Carrollton.
The suspect vehicle was tracked to the suspect's father's residence in Plano, where officers attempted to make contact. The driver fled, leading to a vehicle pursuit that Plano police eventually terminated after losing sight of the Jeep.
At approximately 2:12 a.m. Thursday, Richardson police were notified that Plano officers had lost sight of the aggravated robbery suspect after the vehicle entered Richardson near Custer Road and West Renner Road. Officers were advised the suspect was believed to be armed with a handgun.
Richardson officers soon located the Jeep, but the driver refused to stop, initiating another pursuit that continued into the City of Dallas.
According to Richardson police, the suspect fired multiple shots at pursuing officers during the chase. Officers returned fire while continuing the pursuit.
The chase ended when the suspect vehicle became disabled near Alpha Road and Hughes Lane in Dallas.
Police said officers repeatedly ordered the driver to exit the vehicle with his hands raised. Instead, authorities allege the suspect fired at officers after getting out of the Jeep, prompting multiple Richardson officers to return fire.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Ryan Edward Drouin, was struck by gunfire. Officers immediately removed him from the vehicle and began rendering first aid before Dallas Fire-Rescue transported him to a local hospital.
Police said Drouin's injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
No Richardson police officers were injured during the incident.
Because the officer-involved shooting occurred within the City of Dallas, the Dallas Police Department is leading the criminal investigation. The Dallas County District Attorney's Office is also conducting an independent review of the shooting.
Richardson police said the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy pending the outcome of the internal investigation.
Neither the Plano Police Department nor the Dallas Police Department discharged their weapons during the incident.
The Colony Police Department continues to investigate the aggravated robbery that initiated the chain of events.
The investigation remains ongoing.
