IRVING, Texas - A 34-year-old man has been arrested on a first-degree felony charge after Irving Police say he forced his way into his ex-girlfriend's hotel room and strangled her for approximately 30 seconds.
Irving patrol officers responded at approximately 9 p.m. on Aug. 21 to the Magnuson Extended Stay Hotel in the 100 block of E. Airport Freeway (SH-183), near N. Britain Road, after a caller reported seeing a man strangling a woman.
When officers arrived, they found the victim, a 21-year-old woman who was living at the hotel. Police described her as disheveled and crying following the alleged assault.
The suspect was identified as the woman's ex-boyfriend, Shawntique Clinton Evans, 34.
According to the victim, Evans had a history of arriving at her room unannounced and without an invitation. On the night of the incident, Evans knocked on her door, and the woman opened it without knowing who was outside.
Once she recognized Evans, she demanded that he leave, according to the arrest information.
Police said Evans refused and allegedly forced his way into the room without her consent.
Woman Says She Was Strangled for About 30 Seconds
Once inside, Evans allegedly assaulted the woman by wrapping his arm around her neck and strangling her.
The victim told investigators that her breathing was impeded for approximately 30 seconds during the assault.
Officers reported observing visible redness around the woman's neck consistent with her account of the incident.
Evans fled before police arrived and was not immediately located.
Based on allegations that he entered the victim's residence without permission and committed a felony assault after entering, police obtained an arrest warrant charging Evans with Burglary of a Habitation with Intent to Commit Another Felony, a first-degree felony.
Irving Police officers located Evans on the afternoon of Tuesday, Aug. 25. He was taken into custody without further incident.
