South Irving Property Owners’ Association reports on recent Seminars held

by South Irving Property Owners’ Association

The Irving Central Library treated Irving citizens and guests to several very informative Barnett Shale Seminars last week.

Dr. John A. Breyer, professor of Geology at TCU, was the guest speaker on Tuesday, April 21 at 7 p.m. and gave us a well illustrated Power Point presentation called “What Lies Beneath” Drilling for Gas in Your Neighborhood.  This was a Barnett Shale Geology 101 class and yes, there is gas that lies beneath South Irving and lots of it as Dr. Breyer explained.  He presented the widely held belief about how the gas rich shale was created millions of years ago.  He also explained how important a strong property owners’ association is to negotiate with a gas company to protect their rights by working together.

Attorney Mark Nastri, Esq. of Munsch Hardt Kopf & Harr was the guest speaker on Thursday, April 23 at 7 p.m. and showed us a cartoon of the landman wolf taking advantage of the poor, unsuspecting, single property owner.  Mr. Nastri explained that it doesn’t have to be this way and that the gas company and a property owners’ association can work together for their mutual benefit.  He also explained the lease agreement the landman wolf wants individual owners to sign is a two page “slick lease”.  We learned that a successful property owners’ association lease should be a modified 2 page “slick lease” plus 13 additional pages of rights and protections for the property owner.

Both seminars were heavily attended by SIPOA board members, officers and general membership. Both speakers were applauded and thanked for coming to speak to us.

After the Thursday seminar, the South Irving Property Owners’ Association (SIPOA), Board of Directors elected their Officers to serve SIPOA until January, 2010.

The Board members are:  Rosann Alexander, James Baker, Carol Carper, Linda Fischer, Edna C. Garcia, Roy Getting, Doug Harper, Kenny Hernandez, James Wallace and Don Wilson.  After discussion, nominations and voting, the officers elected are: Don Wilson, Chairman; James Wallace, Vice Chairman; Edna C. Garcia, Secretary; James Baker, Treasurer.

SIPOA recommends that no gas lease be signed before talking to SIPOA.  Landmen from several companies are in Irving seeking to lease mineral rights for the purpose of drilling for natural gas in the Barnett Shale reserve of North Texas.
