Irving Student Identified with Possible Swine Flu

At least one student at Universal Academy, 2616 N. MacArthur Blvd., has been identified with the influenza A virus.

It has not been confirmed if this case is related to the North American flu (NAF), also known as the Swine flu; however, City of Irving Health Authority Dr. Willis Starnes has directed the school to suspend classes for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 2 for seven days.

Dr. Starnes acted in an effort to limit the spread of any infection. There are no confirmed NAF cases in the Irving, Coppell, Carrollton-Farmers Branch independent school districts.

The North American flu is being closely monitored by the city and precautions are being taken to ensure the highest level of public safety for city employees, residents and visitors.

Emergency Management Staff and Dr. Starnes are in close communication with local, state and federal agencies to monitor the effects of NAF in North Texas. City of Irving employees and residents are being advised to use precautionary measures such as washing hands regularly, and covering nose and mouth when they cough and/or sneeze.

The city will provide pertinent updates to the community as more information becomes available.

Those exhibiting flu-like symptoms are advised to seek the advice of a medical professional. Calls to 911 should be reserved for emergencies.
