Irving Public Library to Kick Off Summer Reading Clubs in June

The Irving Public Library’s system-wide summer reading clubs for children, teens and adults are set to launch June 1 and continue through July 31. Readers of all ages can participate in a variety of library-hosted activities and earn prizes for reading throughout the summer. More than 6,000 residents participated in the Irving Public Library’s summer reading programs last year.

The 2009 Children’s Summer Reading Club and the Adult Summer Reading Club are sharing the theme, Celebrate Reading. Kids who sign up are recognized for the days they read 20 minutes or more. With every 10 days of reading, kids will receive certificates, books and prizes. Adults are required to read five books to be eligible for a prize. The theme for this year’s statewide Texas Teens Read! Program, for grades 6-12, is Time Twistin: TTR.09, in which teens are rewarded for every five hours of reading.

Age-appropriate activities to complement the summer reading programs range from puppet shows, magician shows, circus clown appearances, movie showings, and origami to Wii competitions, live animal shows and author visits.
