True.com, headquartered in Irving, settles class action suit

Thomas Wong filed a lawsuit against True.com in June, 2007. Wong was upset that he was charged three times at $49.99 per month after trying to cancel his membership. His lawyers contend the company violated state and federal laws.

Under an agreement filed last Friday, True.com will compensate customers who were incorrectly charged for services since 2003. The customers identified were charged after canceling their accounts.

The agreement also states that True.com must revise their auto-renewal procedure to prevent erroneous charges.

Customers that are due a refund will be contacted and referred to website to request their money back. Court documents show that customers charged one month of membership would receive $35 and those charged for more than two months would receive $50. More than 150,000 members are expected to receive some sort of refund.

According to True.com's attorney, a $1.5 million fund has been setup to comply with the agreement. As clarification, although an agreement has been reached by both parties, it must still be approved by the court before proceeding.

True.com is headquartered in Irving (Las Colinas area) at 300 Decker. Decker is near Highway 114 between O'Connor and Rochelle Rd. The company has over 200 employees.

The company was launched in 2003 by Herb Vest, longtime owner of financial services firm H.D. Vest Inc., which was acquired by Wells Fargo bank in 2001. Vest's goal, he has said, was to help reduce the national divorce rate. According to Ruben Buell, President, True.com is the only Internet dating site that does criminal background checks on all members. It also requires users to verify that they are, indeed, single.
