Richland Hills Man Pleads Guilty to Murder of 8-Year-Old Grandson, Receives 35-Year Sentence

The Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney's Office has announced that 63-year-old Phillip Hughes recently pled guilty to murder and has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

The tragic incident occurred on January 1, 2023, when Hughes fatally stabbed his 8-year-old grandson, Brenym McDonald, with a sharp-edged object.

At around 7:50 a.m. on that fateful day, Richland Hills Police Officers responded to a stabbing call at a residence in the 3500 block of Labadie Drive in Richland Hills. Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of Brenym McDonald near his home. It was reported that Hughes and his grandson were not alone at the time of the incident, and one of the boy's parents called 911.

The guilty plea and subsequent 35-year prison sentence have been accepted by the victim's mother. The Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney's Office expressed gratitude to the Richland Hills Police Department for their diligent work on the case and commitment to ensuring the safety of the community.
