On Tuesday, February 20, 2024, Irving Police Motor Units targeted speed and hazardous violations along S.H. 161 between Belt Line Rd. and Conflans Rd. due to a recent surge in major accidents in the area. With speed identified as a significant factor in these collisions, the Irving Police Department (IPD) aimed to curb speeding and ensure road safety.

Since the start of the month, there have been 15 major accidents on this stretch of roadway, prompting law enforcement action. The IPD emphasized the importance of drivers slowing down to prevent further accidents.

During two separate enforcement sessions totaling four hours, nine motors and two spotters were deployed. Their efforts yielded concerning results, with speeds exceeding legal limits. The highest speed clocked was 111 mph, with numerous vehicles traveling over 100 mph. Most vehicles stopped were traveling at speeds of 90 mph or higher, well above the 70 mph speed limit on S.H. 161.

In total, 143 vehicles were stopped, resulting in 136 citations issued and 30 warnings given out.
