The first incident occurred when James, angered by a near collision with his car during an illegal turn, followed the victim home. Outside the victim's residence, James confronted the victim verbally, which escalated to violence when the victim tried to record James's license plate. James then ran over the victim in a fit of rage.
Two weeks later, James engaged in another violent altercation outside a daycare center. He became enraged by a young couple's delay in securing their baby in a car seat and struck their vehicle before shooting the female victim in the hand and the male victim multiple times in the shoulders and back. He also fired shots into the daycare center, narrowly missing a manager.
