Formerly Homeless McDonald's Employee in Lewisville Receives Surprise Gift from Good Samaritans

Doug Evans with Derrick Mounter

Derrick Mounter's journey from homelessness to employment took another heartwarming turn when he received an unexpected gift from the Evans couple, who had come to his aid during a frigid January evening.

Kyli and Doug Evans spotted Mounter shivering under a bridge during January's freezing weather. Unable to ignore his plight, they offered him warmth and shelter, eventually arriving at the Vista Ridge Village McDonald's in Lewisville. Despite the lobby being closed, the Evanses knocked on the door, hoping to find refuge for Mounter. General manager Paloma Robles, initially surprised by the unexpected visitors, opened the door upon hearing of Mounter's situation.

Recalling the moment, Doug Evans stated, “I just asked, ‘We picked this man up from under the bridge and said we need a place to get warm and something to eat.’”

Their compassionate act defied company policy, which strictly prohibits opening locked doors. Owner Clifton Johnson admitted that even he had been denied entry by employees in the past. However, Robles trusted her instincts and prioritized Mounter's well-being.

Inside the restaurant, Robles learned more about Mounter's story. Before experiencing homelessness, Mounter had aspirations in graphic design, hoping to pursue a career as an animator. His circumstances changed due to a breakup and a severe car accident that left him without a home.

Moved by Mounter's resilience, the Evans couple continued their support by surprising him with a new car, a Toyota Corolla facilitated by Frank Kent Cadillac, to ease his commute to work at McDonald's.

"I was surprised with something I hadn't expected," Mounter expressed.
