White Rock Lake Earns Lone Star Legacy Park Status

White Rock Lake in Dallas, Texas, has been honored with the designation of Lone Star Legacy Park by the Texas Recreation and Parks Society, marking its historic and recreational significance. This recognition is the highest honor bestowed by the organization upon a park, acknowledging its contributions to the community.

White Rock Lake becomes the third City of Dallas park to receive this prestigious statewide distinction, joining Reverchon and Kiest parks.

“For over a century, White Rock Lake Park has been an integral part of our city, initially as a water source and later as a cornerstone of our renowned park system. Appreciated for its diverse recreational opportunities, the park’s beauty now garners attention statewide and nationwide,” said Dallas City Council Member Paula Blackmon. “Dallas remains firmly dedicated to preserving the park’s rich history and nurturing its natural splendor for the enjoyment of future generations.”

To qualify for consideration, nominated parks must be at least 50 years old and meet specific criteria related to design, historic events, local community significance, or unique natural features.

Originally established in 1911 as a water source, White Rock Lake has evolved into a renowned destination for outdoor recreation and conservation. Spanning 2,200 acres, it attracts over two million visitors annually with its trails, picnic areas, boating, fishing, and rare remnants of the Blackland Prairie ecosystem.

“White Rock Lake Park is a truly remarkable place with a long and interesting history that is enjoyed by people from all over the city of Dallas and beyond,” said Maria Hasbany, a member of the Dallas Park and Recreation Board. “It is an honor to receive the designation of  Lone Star Legacy Park and it wouldn’t be possible without the ongoing care and support of both the Dallas Park and Recreation Department and our community partners.”

White Rock Lake has previously received state honors, including the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Lone Star Land Steward Award for habitat management and wildlife conservation.

“White Rock Lake is one of Dallas’ oldest and busiest parks and a favorite of residents and visitors. Offering diverse recreational activities including athletic fields, wooded hiking and biking trails, rental facilities, rowing, and natural wildflower areas, White Rock plays a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of Dallas residents and communities,” said John D. Jenkins, Director, Dallas Park and Recreation Department. “We look forward to the next 100 years as White Rock continuously evolves to meet the recreational interests of our communities.”

Originally developed with assistance from the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, White Rock Lake boasts 11 historic structures still in use today. Its rich history includes serving as a POW camp during World War II and temporary housing for post-war students of Southern Methodist University.

As White Rock Lake celebrates its designation as a Lone Star Legacy Park, Dallas looks forward to its continued evolution in meeting the recreational interests of the community in the next century.
